Sara Josephine Baker was an American physician who saved many lives through her contributions to public health. She was openly a lesbian and feminist; moreover, a suffragist: she advocated the right to vote, especially for women. She also paid close attention to the connection between poverty and poor health; thus, making it her mission to save sick children living in poverty. She became the director of the Bureau of Child Hygiene and worked tirelessly to support health education and promote child welfare.
